Orthodontics

Who wouldn't love to show out their flawless smile? We all want a fantastic smile, but most of us have a hard time getting there. Teeth misalignments, spacing, overcrowding, are just about a few orthodontic complaints that patients encounter. With early orthodontic care (interceptive orthodontics), children can benefit by obtaining the right kind of care and treatment for their dental conditions from a young age without having to undergo expensive treatment in the future as teeth are easier to shift while the jaws are still growing.

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the dental specialty that involves correcting a badly aligned set of teeth and jaws. Having a straighter smile also ensures better oral health, as it is always easier to keep them clean as compared to a crooked set of teeth.

Types of Treatment

Timely orthodontic treatment can help resolve the below issues:

  • Unnecessary gaps between teeth
  • Mend and straighten crooked teeth
  • Resolve teeth misalignments
  • Inability to pronounce and chew properly
  • Wearing or trauma to the teeth
  • Improper bites

Good orthodontic treatment not only improves the appearance and clarity of your smile, but also allows the patient to ensure better oral hygiene, speak properly, and protect teeth from damage or decay.

Orthodontic devices

Crooked teeth, misalignments, and gapping issues can be resolved with the help of orthodontic appliances. These appliances work by applying a gentle and systematic pressure against your teeth and jaws. The orthodontist would be the right person to determine which appliance would best suit your condition. He/she would explain your case and how the suited orthodontic appliance can restore your teeth to its perfect shape and appearance.

There are two types of orthodontic appliances: fixed and removable appliances.

  • Braces

Braces are the most common type of fixed orthodontic device that can help straighten your crooked smile. It consists of bands, wires, and brackets. They would be adjusted on a monthly basis based on how quickly the treatment progresses.

  • Fixed space maintainer

Fixed space maintainers are prescribed for children. They ensure that teeth on either side of a gap wouldn't shift and move into it until the permanent tooth comes in.

  • Special-fixed appliances

These appliances can be used by children to help them control tongue thrusting or thumb sucking.

  • Aligners

Aligners are thermoplastic tray-shaped cups that are designed to fit into the shape of your teeth. Aligners are meant to shift and align teeth to its natural position thereby straightening teeth.

  • Palatal expanders

Expanders can help widen the arch of the upper jaw. The palatal expander would consist of a plastic plate with screws that would be placed in the roof of the mouth to expand its area.
